Social Media Roundup: #EdoNorBeLagos, Patriarchy FC and Other Trending Stories

7 months ago 286

Hi guys, trust you had a great week. Happy Independence Day in advance. While you’re counting down to Nigeria’s diamond jubilee, sit back and relax as we take you through the many trends that have been making the rounds across social media.

Despite the controversial build-up to the Edo Governorship elections, PDP’s Godwin Obaseki emerged winner without post-election violence. He won against APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu who had received the backing of party godfathers Bola Tinubu and Adams Oshiomhole.

The election result brought about reactions from many Nigerians who went online to remind us that ‘Edo nor be Lagos’.

Obaseki removed Adams Oshiomole as APC chairman.
Obaseki has also retired Adams Oshiomole politically.
Obaseki made Tinubu put out a press video which he never does.
Obaseki is the Jagaban of Edo State politics.
Congratulations @GovernorObaseki

The moral lesson of this election is that we say no to god fatherism, and for Tinubu he should know is time is coming to an end. I just hope lagos people can do the same too. #EdoDecides2020 #EdoElection #EdoNorBeLagos

Some people saw Obaseki’s victory in Edo state as a win for democracy and a sign that godfatherism no longer guarantees certain victory at elections. Others mocked APC for losing.

Patriarchy FC Joins Nigeria Twitter League

No, this is not about football. Nigeria twitter is apparently like a ‘league’ hosting a variety of ‘clubs’. For instance there is the well-known Wizkid FC as well as the Feminist Coven FC and others.

Patriarchy FC is the latest to join in. The clique is mostly made up of men who are anti-feminists.

We will be needing our own social media soon. I did the honor of registering @imasuen_design @unicodeveloper and @saniyusuf will build it 😂

— Osaretin Victor Asemota (@asemota) September 21, 2020

Just like feminism is a reaction to the age long action of suppression, the Patriarchy FC bant is a revolt against the toxicity and absurdity that come with misandry masquerading as feminism. Know this, know peace. ✌

— Penknight ♞ (@PenKnight2) September 21, 2020

Feminists, equal rights activists and neutrals however, expressed their disgust at the Patriarchy FC movement.

Using the one thing that’s hurt women from time to make jokes that mostly YOU find funny isn’t worth defending. Patriarchy has ruled the world for the longest time & has hurt women in many ways. There’s nothing funny about the Patriarchy FC tweets or that it’s being defended

— ebele. (@ebelee_) September 21, 2020

Looking at these "Patriarchy FC" tweets and realising again that this generation will not be saving Nigeria.

A people that don't understand the importance of equal rights and dignity in social interactions can never achieve truly democratic freedom.

My man actually puts mouth into these patriarchy FC thingy, I see it and I laugh. Coz that man, is a complete gentleman and Lover boy, even writes about 30+ women being the best in the world, but the girl he loves so much is under 25. Take this place serious, problem tie niyen!

Wizkid’s ‘Smile’ Video Released

Wizkid released the video of his hit single, ‘Smile’ this week and people have taken to social media to share their opinions about the video.

I love the SMILE music video, the creativity, and the concept but the only dope part of the song itself is by H.E.R . Wizkid is not much of a singer anymore I'm sorry, I really like him but I try to like his music these days but he's lost it I'm afraid

This Smile's Video is everything! So beautiful. ❤

— Punch Newspapers (@MobilePunch) September 21, 2020

While several Nigerians find it queer that Martins would play at the epicenter of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic ravaging the world, others wonder how old the former Super Eagle really is as he seems to have been playing forever.

My brother the matter tire me. Nigerians and their quest for money. Of all clubs, na Wuhan him go? Let @NCDCgov just add him to their figure that’s all.
